Hát Bội and the art of face painting brought joy to students during the "Cultural Festival 2024" at the HCMC Student Cultural House (May 4, 2024).

On the morning of April 22, 2024, Hiếu Văn Ngư (Cultura Fish) and the Hồ Chí Minh City Hát Bội Art Theater continued their Hát Bội workshop for students at Wellspring Saigon International Bilingual School.

Hiếu Văn Ngư presents a playlist featuring 13 pieces of Phú Lễ Sắc Bùa Singing Art (Bến Tre), recorded during our recent field trip.

Over more than three months of collaboration, Hiếu Văn Ngư and Hoàng Bảo have brought a series of exciting content.

“Lo chuyện gì” is a music-story series (storytelling combined with music) co-produced by Hiếu Văn Ngư and artist Hoàng Bảo, streamed live at 8:00 PM on bi-weekly Saturdays from December 30, 2023, to February 24, 2024.

With the theme “Exploring Vietnamese Culture,” the course “Knowing Oneself and Others” (Season 2 from March 10 – March 18, 2023) endeavored to provide students with diverse experiences not only in the number of fields (anthropology, traditional theater, cuisine, rituals, etc.) but also in the variety of delivery methods (classes, workshops, brewing experiences, field trips, etc.).

A program incorporating multiple perspectives from storytelling about history and culture, to gastronomy, sports, exploration, and photography, enables students to better understand the city where they live.

As of today, Cultura Fish has only started its first steps on this long journey ahead. Looking back on our two years of formation and progress, Cultura Fish has slowly grown through each of our projects.

As an effort to have a full picture about The Southern Gem, Cultura Fish had the opportunity to meet and interview with the director of The Hát Bội Theatre of Hồ Chí Minh city, mister Võ Hồ Hoàng Vũ, he was also the art director of the program.

During the years of 2017-2018, there were many activities, projects, and programs that focus on hát bội, where it aimed to revive the art of hát bội upon various mediums and perspectives, the resurgence came up like an exciting wave of vitality for this long forgotten art to be born again.

From December 29, 2021, to January 12, 2022, Cultura Fish successfully organized the online course "Hát Bội 101: Cắc rụp tịch tang".

Theatre characters in hát bội have an important function for the technical elements.

“Nịnh” motif, “Tướng” (villain) and “Yêu đạo” motifs

In đào motif, only the character Chung Vô Diệm, Đào Tam Xuân, and Ngọc Kỳ Lân have their makeup as mask-like, the rest of them all have light makeup face.

“Lão" is a term to describe male characters (kép) that are elderly.

“Kép” is a term to describe male characters. Their appearances tend to be young or middle aged male, with a light makeup face (using beard to distinguish).
